Some strains arrive with a marketing campaign. Others earn their reputation the slow way—one jar at a time moving through the right circles until everybody is asking for the same thing. Gary Payton did a little of both. By the time it really hit the public market, people already knew there was something different about it.
The story starts with Powerzzzup Genetics, working closely with the Cookies crew. The goal was to create something that carried the strength and resin of modern Cookies lines but with a little more clarity and edge in the high. The cross that produced Gary Payton paired The Y—a mysterious Cookies-family cut—with Snowman, another Cookies-derived selection known for its loud doughy terp profile and serious potency.
When the plants started showing up in rooms, growers noticed right away that Gary Payton wasn’t just another Cookies dessert hybrid. The structure was balanced and athletic—more upright than some of the squat Cookie lines, with strong branching and buds that stacked into dense, frosted clusters. It was a plant that behaved well indoors and still produced serious weight if you treated it right.
The smell is what usually hooks people first. Crack a jar and you get a layered mix of sweet dough, creamy funk, and sharp gas riding underneath. There’s a slight herbal brightness in there too that keeps it from becoming overly sweet. It’s loud in the room and even louder when the buds are broken apart.
Resin production is one of its strongest traits. Gary Payton buds come out coated in thick trichomes, the kind of frost that looks like the plant got rolled in sugar before harvest. The flowers tend to cure into dense, sticky nuggets that hold their aroma well over time.
